Dark Passenger Embraces the Original Dark Passenger

not your everyday serial killer - dexter

Was that as confusing to everyone else as it just was to me when I reread it?  Sorry about that, dark passengers, but the time has come to get back to our dark roots (not picking on any bottle blondes out there…)  Tonight, Dark Passenger announces a new series that will be ongoing now through the end of the year…roughly.

Before I get into just what the heck I’m talking about, let me back up explain how this will effect the rest of our discussions.  It won’t.  There have been some reasons – that I won’t get into – for why the dream series has been delayed.  It’s still comin’!  Soon.   Promise.

As many of you may know, Dark Passenger got its name from the Showtime series, Dexter.  For the rest of you, the concept of a dark passenger living inside, driving us to do things, is brought up by our favorite serial killer with a soul, if you will.  You see, Dexter is a serial killer who lives by a code that forbids him from killing innocents.  Instead of letting his dark passenger drive him to evil, he channels his blood lust into good by killing only other killers.

Basically, Dexter is billed as the ideal anti-hero, but we love him anyway.

Or do we love him because of it?

Regardless, fans of the show – like me! – have been tuning in for three seasons to watch the combination of drama, crime and dark humor unfold before our eyes.

Have you not yet seen Dexter?  Maybe you’ve heard good things about the show yet you don’t watch because the idea of coming in after three seasons of plot development is unappealing?  Well, it’s your lucky day, dark passengers, because Showtime begins re-airing the series from the very first episode tonight with a three-episode marathon.  (Didn’t remember to set the recorder?  Don’t worry.  This is Showtime we’re talking about so I’m sure we’ll see it rerun at least a dozen times during the week.)

So check your local listings and clear out enough space in the old DVR unit to record all 36 episodes (3 seasons) that will air every Sunday now through the beginning of the Season 4 premiere in the fall.

…and then join me here to discuss the Dexter episodes, one by one, until we’re all humming with anticipation for our favorite serial killer to return to the screen.  Come on, let your dark passenger come out to play with this one.  You know you want to…

Jen

I totally dug(?) Dexter even before most people had heard of him, since I’d stumbled upon Jeff Lindsay’s books before he got picked up by Showtime. … about a year ago I watched Season 1 Episode 1 of the tv show via Netflix online and wasn’t impressed, so haven’t bothered following up with the rest of the show…

btw, I know Season 1 kinda reflected Book 1… as far as I know only three books are out… any idea idea whether seasons 2 & 3 reflected Books 2 & 3? And where Season 4 will go? :)

You know, I’m the opposite because I didn’t really connect with the books – which is extremely odd for me. And once my friends who’ve read the books starting dissing the 3rd book in the series as doing a disservice to the series, I moved it way down on my list of books to read.

I honestly think you should give the Showtime series another try. The first episode really didn’t resonate with a lot of people, but the series really seems to take off by the second or third episode. My best friend actually almost didn’t make it all the way through the first episode, but managed to stick it out and is now as big a fan as I am.

I’m not really sure if they stick close to the books or if they go way off into left field. I’m led to believe that the second season wasn’t a true follow and that the third was completely off doing its own thing. But like I said, I haven’t read them so I can’t be sure if what I’ve heard was true or not. *shrugs*

    No problem.

Showtime really should be paying me a commission! :P

I watched Dexter a few times when they were showing it on network TV. It *is* an excellent show, but it’s a tough watch for me, because it’s so disturbing. Here you’ve got a serial killer, who really is terrifyingly dangerous and without a lot of normal emotions/empathy, and yet we end up sympathizing with him and even cheering him on in some fashion.

Which is a brilliant concept for a show, but still gives me the heebie jeebies…heh.

Yeah, Book 3 was terrible. The author tried to be too clever, trying to put an origin to the Dark Passenger, and totally messing it up.

I will probably end up watching the series.. thing is, with no Showtime, we’ll do it via Netflix, and we’ve got over 200 titles on our queue there, LoL! It’ll be a while… :)

You know…I never thought about it that way. I probably should have, but I’m so fascinated with serial killers that it never occurred to me. Of course, if this was a court case going on about a guy who did the Dexter stuff in real life then I would completely horrified…I hope.

Putting an origin to the dark passenger? Blech. I can see why everyone’s been telling how terrible it was!

200? Wow! Sounds like someone is going to busy for a while…
